What is a starter and how do I know when there is a problem with my auto starter?

25 July, 2012

The starter is an essential part of your automobile. The starter provides the necessary mechanical motion to get the engine running. The electricity needed to get the starter to turn is provided by the battery.

In our busy society today, many of us do not think about the various auto parts that have been assembled together to make our automobiles run. Without all of these working parts, we wouldn't be able to get to the store, get to work, or travel to a vacation destination. It's not enjoyable to have a starting problem with the family automobile since it is such a vital part of our everyday lives.

The starter location varies from one auto manufacturer to another, though it is usually located near the lower part of the engine. Sometimes, it can be found on the top of the transmission bell housing. It can even be located in between the heads on a V8 engine, beneath the intake manifold!

The starter in your automobile typically lasts around 80,000 miles before it starts to show its age. When it does, the warning signs typically show up as an engine that turns over slower than usual or clicks when the driver turns the key on to start the auto. When you hear these warning signs, it is time to seek out the help of a trained mechanic or technician whose skills can help to pinpoint the cause of your starting problem before the inconvenience of an automobile that will not start when you need it most.
