How to avoid costly and unnecessary electric fuel pump replacement.

25 July, 2012

Electric fuel pump replacement is costly. The cost for parts and labor can be anywhere from $400.00 to $1,000.00. A little diligence on your part can spare you the unwanted no start inconvenience and repair expenses.

In 99% of the vehicles on the road today, the electric fuel pump is located inside the gas tank. Unlike the mechanical fuel pumps of old, electric fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel that is in the tank. As the fuel inside the gas tank is used, more of the pump becomes exposed and the temperature of the electric fuel pump begins to climb. Electrical components and heat are not best friends. Simply put, running your vehicle dangerously low on fuel, or worse, completely out of gas, puts your electric fuel pump at death’s door and can end up saddling you with a large, unwelcome bill.

With gas prices astronomical and climbing, it is tempting to stretch your fuel to the limit and to try to get as much bang for your buck before refueling. Don’t do it! Try not to let your fuel gauge drop below a quarter of a tank.

Don't wait until the low fuel light comes on; it may be too late! A little diligence on your part can spare you the unwanted inconvenience of a no start and the unwelcome expense of parts and labor to replace your electric fuel pump.
